The FPCCI:
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry is the apex,
democratic, representative body of the corporate sector of Pakistan. Since
its inception in 1950, the FPCCI has worked towards bridging the gap between
the private sector and the Government. It has always dutifully voiced the
collective opinion, concern and aspirations of the private sector in the
country, while offering assistance, advice and the accumulated experience of
the business community to the government, for the people.
Currently, the FPCCI membership includes 76 Regional Chambers of Commerce
and Industry and more than 142 Professional and Trade Associations. Hence,
the FPCCI speaks for almost half a million business nation-wide and connects
thematic, specialized and professional acumen. In addition to the Karachi
headquarters, it has regional offices in Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta and
Peshawar
Us: The CSR Standing Committee
With its progress over the years, the FPCCI has paved the existence of a
number of Standing Committees. These Standing Committees are constituted
with the purpose of addressing diverse business concerns. With a six-year
impetus stemming from specialized humanity-based committees, a special,
umbrella committee was founded in April, 2008 - The Standing Committee on
CSR.
A Frank Vision:
‘Developing the awareness and implementation of Corporate Social
Responsibility in Pakistan’
The Standing Committee on CSR understands that the primary obstruction to
CSR in Pakistan is the lack of awareness and understanding of the CSR
concept. There is an obvious separation between CSR engagement and the
benefits that might accrue to the organization as a consequence. Moreover,
lack of synergistic efforts tends to reduce impact of any powerful activity
generated.
As such, the Standing Committee on CSR has initiated its journey by aiming
to develop an understanding and commitment of CSR with all key stakeholders
across the FPCCI. Presently, it is still in a stage of strengthening its
foundations. However, it plans to progress on to imparting training,
creating foreign affiliations for support and benchmarking, and chalking out
a roadmap with specific goals and projects.
The Standing Committee on CSR is built on the purpose of increasing
productivity and competitiveness of local businesses through redefining
their stakeholders’ boundaries. That is, undertaking programs to ensure the
confidence of not only shareholders, but all elements involved and affected
by an entity.
This has triggered the aspiration of the FPCCI Standing Committee on CSR -
to integrate CSR into core business practices and as a part of
organizational mission and vision- in written policy and action.
CSR Reason and Purpose
There has been a shift from the traditional approach of mere profit
maximization to extending attention to integrate social, environmental and
ethical concerns into a company's business process.
The FPCCI’s Standing Committee on CSR defines Corporate Social
Responsibility as:
“CSR is the strategic and practical link between inclusive development and
economic growth, realised by business behaviour that generates a trustworthy
reputation of responsible fair play and genuine concern for broad-based
wellness of the society with the commitment of key stakeholders.
The effectiveness of CSR is directly dependent upon an organization’s
implementation of its values, corporate governance, business relationships
and impacts.”
It is believed that by integrating CSR, these corporations will receive
multiple benefits- a happier and healthier workforce, increased efficiency,
higher productivity and conservation of their most valuable resource - their
human resources. At the same time the wide variety of activities under the
CSR umbrella will allow these corporations to realize accurately their role
as social entities.
In the end it becomes a win-win situation for all - companies, workforces
(the people), the economy and, ultimately, our nation.

However, similar work has been a part of the FPCCI for several years,
undertaken by its various Standing Committees. A prime objective of the
Standing Committee on CSR is to provide a distinct platform to all these
various Standing Committees to enhance and highlight their individual
efforts. This will help synergize the accomplished progress and further
define the collaborated roadmap.
